The City Visoko
Visoko is a city in the canton Zenica-Doboj in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visoko is located in the delta of the river Fojnica 25 kilometers northwest from Sarajevo.
The municipality of Visoko covers an area of 232 km². During the census 1991 the municipality Visoko covered 44,130 inhabitants. In the city of Visoko lived 14,140 persons. Today the number of inhabitants of the city of Visoko is approximately 17,000 persons.
Well-known buildings of the city of Visoko are: the Hadzi Ibrahim mosque and the white mosque (Bijela dzamija or also Serefudinova dzamija) , 1980 build by Zlatko Ugljen.
Visoko had in 1885 one Greek-eastern church, 13 mosques, a district court and 4994 usually Bosnian inhabitants. Visoko was in former times one of the most outstanding commercial centres of Bosnia and had a lively tobacco and leather industry. However in June 2006 UNESCO Secretary-General Koichiro Matsuura has assured to the Bosnian president Sulejman Tihic that the experts of the organization will take part in the investigation in Visoko. |
